Mornington Island WTP Detailed Design
Dept of Local Government Water and Volunteers
Brief
A detailed design is required for the development and upgrade of the Mornington Island WTP. Mornington Island Shire Council (MoSC) is located in the South-Eastern corner of the Gulf of Carpentaria with a population of approximately 1300 people (according to DWQMP) and is one of the 16 indigenous councils. MSC Water Treatment Plant (WTP) has insufficient treatment capacity, limited life expectancy, and insufficient treatment barriers to meet health-based targets. The current water infrastructure is serviceable but aged and requires investment to upgrade technology and add additional treatment processes for a sustainable water supply system for the community of Gununa. This project will ensure a fit for purpose long term solution for water infrastructure to meet current and future water quality standards and water demand for the community. The water infrastructure is critical in supplying safe and reliable potable water across the community of Mornington Island. The objective of this project is to address concerns around water security, safety and reliability for the community on Mornington Island. The communities water supply is rated as a level 2 catchment for health-based targets and consequently the WTP needs additional treatment in place to meet the required log reduction values. Water concerns are compounded by high water demand, necessity around water quality standards, and the need for plant reliability.
