Typically, the bark and residue produced from the action of separating the bark from the sandalwood tree is pushed into heaps ranging from 30 – 50 tonnes in size. The bark heaps contain pieces of sandalwood with some commercial value. The purpose of Residue Processing is to extract sandalwood pieces from the bark heaps that meet the specification for dead butts, logs and branches, as outlined in Contractor Procedure 804. Approximately 30 – 50% of the bark heap will yield sandalwood residue products.
